FAQ

Why should I change my AC/Furnace Filter?

Well, they get dirty. The accumulation of dirt affects the performance of your AC system. The longer you keep a dirty air filter in the system, the more pronounced its effects become. When an air filter is dirty, its mesh becomes clogged with dirt and debris. This makes it harder for air to pass through the filter and into the air system. The AC system will use more energy to push the air forward, which can lead to increased strain and higher energy bills. Also, fresh air won't come in, making the air inside your home stagnant and dirtier.

How often should I change my AC/Furnace Filter?

Changing your air filters at least every 90 days is generally recommended. However, the longevity of the furnace filter can be decreased by various factors. If you smoke, vape, or have indoor pets, it is advised to replace your air filters at least every 60 days. Additionally, if allergies or asthma are a concern in your household, it is recommended that your filters be replaced monthly. This will help keep the air cleaner, especially if you choose a higher MERV rated filter.

Which is the best filter for me and my home?

The most important factors to consider when choosing an air filter are size, filtration rating (MERV), and quality. Captain Filter offers high-performing filters at an affordable price.

Are pleated filters better than fiberglass filters?

We only sell pleated filters, and there's a good reason for that. These filters last longer than fiberglass filters and capture over 85% of air particles in your space, depending on your home's size and filtration needs. In contrast, fiberglass filters made of spun glass don't last as long and capture a much smaller percentage of air particles. Although you may pay more upfront for a pleated filter, it will provide better air quality, generate less waste, and help your equipment last longer.

Where is my AC/Furnace Filter and how do I replace it?

Your air filter is usually found inside a vent on an interior wall or in the ceiling. The vent is typically white but can sometimes be painted the same color as the wall. To access the filter, simply pull the small lever on the side of the vent to open it. After that, remove the old filter and insert the new one.

How often should I change my AC/Furnace Filter?

Knowing when to change your air filters depends on the indoor air quality you want to achieve. Captain Filter's filters usually last up to 90 days, but you may need to replace them sooner. Many factors can affect when you should switch out your current air filter. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, a fresh filter can help improve the indoor air quality. If you have pets or smoke indoors, changing your air filters more frequently than every 90 days can help maintain fresher air quality.

Can I run my AC/Furnace without a filter?

Not having an air filter installed in an AC unit can lead to several issues, both for the home and the AC system. An air filter acts as a security guard, protecting you and your AC unit from dust and dirt. If these harmful particles are left unfiltered, they can cause damage to both you and your AC unit over time.

Is there a right and wrong way to install my filter?

Air filters have a tightly woven mesh that captures particles. Installing the filter backward affects air quality and increases energy bills. Look for arrows and "Air Flow" on the filter and ensure that the arrows face into the opening.

What is a MERV rating?

MERV is an acronym that stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a rating system that measures the filtration capacity of your air filter. The rating typically ranges from 1 to 20, with MERV 1 filters capable of removing larger debris, while MERV 20 filters can effectively filter out microscopic particles like viruses and bacteria. Captain Filter provides air filters with MERV 8, MERV 11, and MERV 13 ratings.

Please note that we only issue refunds or returns for incorrect sizes if the error was made by Captain Filter's fulfillment team.

What is nominal size vs. actual size?

The nominal size is the size listed on the product chart and corresponds to the size of your intake vent. On the other hand, the actual size refers to the true measurements of your air filter dimensions, which may be slightly smaller than the intake vent dimensions. For instance, if you're looking for a 14x25x1 air filter, you'll most likely come across a product with an actual size listed as 14.5" x 24.5" x .75". This is because nearly all AC filters use the nominal size, which is simply the actual size rounded up to the nearest inch.
